I love Thanksgiving and all that this holiday season brings – colder temperatures, snow, an excuse to drink lots of hot chocolate, and precious time to spend with family and friends. My daughter got off of school early yesterday, which brought me such great joy, as it reminded me of my own childhood and how fun it was to have time away from school. And, my son came home yesterday from college, which is always a thrill for us.
I spent yesterday evening prepping for today, chopping up onions, celery, mushrooms, sweet potatoes, and preparing one of my husband’s favorite desserts – banana pudding. Today is not only Thanksgiving, it’s my husband’s birthday, so we have even more cause to celebrate this amazing day. Family and friends will be stopping by our home early this afternoon and I’m looking forward to creating even more pleasant memories. And, though it can seem a bit daunting at times to pull everything together for our Thanksgiving meal, I have to remind myself that this isn’t something I have to do – it’s something that I get to do. It’s a choice.
Of course, not every family member’s personality is easy to digest, which may be a blessing in disguise, as it could be quite dull if everyone was exactly the same! But, it does present an opportunity for self-growth and reflection. So, as I continually prepare for our get together, I’m also choosing to clean up on myself and on other family members, to make sure the holiday is spectacular for everyone. That way, I hope to come to the event with as much of a clean slate as possible, so I can truly see the gift in everything and everyone, including myself.
Thanksgiving is such a wonderful opportunity for us to reflect on not only the gifts that others bring to us throughout the year, but the gifts we bring to the world. I hope your day is filled with so much gratitude and appreciation, that it carries you through the rest of the year and beyond. Happy Thanksgiving!
